State funding secured for the Norwegian Scientific Academy for Polar Research

It is a great pleasure for us to announce that the Norwegian Scientific Academy for Polar Research (NVP) will receive NOK 1 million over the Norwegian state budget starting in 2026.

This financial contribution to NVP will be used to promote research and education in polar areas and communicate its relevance to policy management and society. This means engaging in major processes such as the International Polar Year 2032-2033 and organizing scientific seminars across disciplines and relevant topics. In addition, the funding will support the NVP international summer school in Svalbard for early-career polar scientists, which is an important task for the academy. The summer schools address highly relevant Arctic and Antarctic issues and the students engage with some of the best polar scientists.

The goal of the Polar Academy is to advance polar science for sustainable development and to work towards linking society and the Arctic environment. Another important task is to develop the global network of polar researchers and support early career scientists who are pursuing polar research.

With this state funding, the Norwegian Scientific Academy for Polar Research is recognized as a learned academy, like other distinguished academies in Norway. This financial support provides us with an excellent opportunity to further expand our mission in polar science.
