Royal Patronage Extended for the Norwegian Academy of Polar Research

The Norwegian Academy of Polar Research is pleased to announce that His Majesty The King of Norway has extended his Royal Patronage of the Academy for a further five-year period, from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2030.

Royal patronage serves as a formal recognition of organisations and initiatives within key areas of society and is normally granted for a five-year term. The extension reflects continuity and confidence in the Academy’s role as an independent scientific institution with an international outlook.

For our international members, it may be helpful to note that the Norwegian Royal Patronage functions as an official recognition from the Norwegian monarchy, aimed at raising public awareness of organisations that play an important role in society. While the arrangement itself is formal, many view it as a sign of continuity and esteem within Norway’s civic and cultural landscape.

The continued Royal Patronage is a welcome recognition of the Academy’s contribution to promoting polar research and international scientific cooperation. The Academy is honoured by the King’s continued support and remains committed to advancing knowledge and facilitating collaboration in the polar regions in the years ahead, at a time of rapid environmental and societal change.
