We are delighted to announce that as of October 2025, Professor Geir Wing Gabrielsen has assumed the role of Secretary General of the Polar Academy. With a distinguished career spanning ecology, physiology and environmental toxicology of Arctic fauna at the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) and the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), Gabrielsen brings exceptional expertise and leadership to the Academy.

In his new capacity, Gabrielsen will oversee the Academy’s membership activities and strengthening our presence across scientific arenas, ensuring active engagement among our fellows. His main responsibilities will include nurturing strategic institutional collaborations both within Norway and internationally with like-minded organisations.

We also extend our deepest gratitude to Professor Thor Severin Larsen, who has served as Secretary General since 2012 and has been working alongside Gabrielsen during an overlap period in October. Larsen’s tireless commitment and contributions to the Academy are deeply appreciated.

Looking ahead, the Academy is well positioned to broaden its reach, enhance the quality of its events and collaborations, and actively support interdisciplinary polar research.
