10 year’s anniversary activities in Longyearbyen
The Academy will celebrate ten years anniversary Longyearbyen between the 4th and 07th of June with a series of activities organized in cooperation with the The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, UNIS, UiT – The Arctic University of Norway and Nord University.
Secrets of a Frozen Ocean - Best Documentary at the New York International Film Festival 2018
“Secrets of A Frozen Ocean” follows 75 year old, Yngve Kristoffersen, a Norwegian Scientist and member of the Academy who sets out on a dangerous 13-month expedition in a small hovercraft (R/H SABVABAA) together with Audun Tholfsen.
13 new members have been elected during the Annual Meeting 2017
It is a pleasure to inform that thirteen (13) new members were elected during the Academy’s Annual Meeting in Trondheim, Norway 1st December 2017.
Professor Ove Tobias Gudmestad has been awarded as the recipient of the 2018 Jin S. Chung Award
The International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers, has selected Prof. Gudmestad as the recipient of the Jin S. Chung Award for the year 2018.

This international summer school in Longyearbyen, Svalbard 2017 had a multi- and cross-disciplinary thematic approach to meet challenges and opportunities related to governance of the Arctic Ocean’s focusing on the marginal ice zone (MIZ).
Daily reports from the GoNorth Expeditions
The GoNorth consortium has proposed a wide-ranging and cross-disciplinary program to acquire new and essential knowledge about the oceanic areas, from the sea floor and subsea geology, through the water column, to the surface sea ice. Education will be an important part of the program.
